Je me suis alors demand\u00e9 quelle impression ce novice \u00e0 \u00ab&nbsp;l\u2019\u0153il innocent&nbsp;\u00bb garderait de cette exposition et, en particulier, de la cr\u00e9ation abstraite des ann\u00e9es 1914-1917, notamment les fameux reliefs et contre-reliefs qui constituent une section importante, probablement la plus importante, de cette exposition et auxquels une place de choix est \u00e9galement d\u00e9vou\u00e9e dans le catalogue.<\/p>\n<p>Or, dans la partie consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation abstraite et aux reliefs de l\u2019exposition de B\u00e2le, on ne voit, \u00e0 deux exceptions pr\u00e8s, que des reconstructions (une bonne douzaine si non plus). Soyons clairs&nbsp;: une reconstruction r\u00e9alis\u00e9e des dizaines d\u2019ann\u00e9es apr\u00e8s la mort de l\u2019artiste ne remplacera jamais l\u2019original&nbsp;; elle constitue incontestablement une interpr\u00e9tation. Alors laquelle&nbsp;? Je parle en connaissance de cause puisqu\u2019en en 1975, j\u2019ai r\u00e9alis\u00e9 des reconstructions de sculptures constructivistes d\u2019un contemporain de Tatline. L\u2019artiste, Vladimir Stenberg, \u00e9tait bien vivant et, \u00e0 ma demande, a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 les plans d\u00e9taill\u00e9s des pi\u00e8ces. J\u2019ai pouss\u00e9 l\u2019investigation jusqu\u2019\u00e0 lui demander la nature des outils qu\u2019il avait utilis\u00e9\u2026 J\u2019ai essay\u00e9 ainsi de discuter avec lui les d\u00e9tails de ces reconstructions. Sans grand succ\u00e8s. J\u2019ai rapidement compris \u00e0 quel point il s\u2019agissait d\u2019interpr\u00e9tations de l\u2019artiste lui-m\u00eame, qui, un demi-si\u00e8cle apr\u00e8s la r\u00e9alisation de ces \u0153uvres, \u00e9tait loin des pr\u00e9occupations qui \u00e9taient \u00e0 l\u2019origine de ce travail. Et je n\u2019insisterai jamais assez sur l\u2019aspect \u00ab&nbsp;historique&nbsp;\u00bb si non th\u00e9orique de ma propre d\u00e9marche, elle aussi &#8212; et combien&nbsp;! &#8212; interpr\u00e9tative.<\/p>\n<p>Or, plusieurs \u0153uvres abstraites de Tatline, y compris le seul relief survivant de l\u2019hiver 1914-1915, manquent non seulement \u00e0 l\u2019exposition de B\u00e2le, mais aussi au catalogue de l\u2019exposition de B\u00e2le. Compar\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019extraordinaire lyrisme du travail tatlinien, \u00e0 la finesse lin\u00e9aire, \u00e0 la transparence toute m\u00e9taphysique de ses pi\u00e8ces des ann\u00e9es 1914 et 1915, d\u2019une r\u00e9alisation plastique qui, comme toute grande envol\u00e9e stylistique, arrive aux limites de la \u00ab&nbsp;maniera&nbsp;\u00bb, les reconstructions que l\u2019on voit \u00e0 B\u00e2le sont d\u2019une redoutable lourdeur. \u00c0 mes yeux, aujourd\u2019hui en tant que reconstructions, elles datent indiscutablement. Face aux deux ou trois photographies originales de l\u2019\u00e9poque (par chance, elles existent et sont incluses dans l\u2019exposition), on se rend compte de la brutalit\u00e9 passive des reconstructions, une lourdeur fort \u00e9loign\u00e9e de la l\u00e9g\u00e8ret\u00e9 sibylline du travail de Tatline (il suffit de comparer les reconstructions aux dessins contemporains de l\u2019artiste et m\u00eame \u00e0 ceux des ann\u00e9es 1920).<\/p>\n<p>En examinant ces reconstructions, on comprend que la vision de l\u2019\u0153uvre de Tatline qu\u2019elles proposent aujourd\u2019hui est pass\u00e9e par le filtre des strates historiques qui se sont superpos\u00e9es \u00e0 notre connaissance (Dada, Schwitters, etc.), et ce jusqu\u2019aux traces des destructions brutales de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, pour ne pas dire par ceux du \u00ab&nbsp;nouveau r\u00e9alisme&nbsp;\u00bb. Doit-on \u00e9voquer Tapi\u00e8s\u00a0?<\/p>\n<p>Le catalogue de l\u2019exposition r\u00e9serve d\u2019autres surprises car on y trouve, \u00e0 titre documentaire, des \u0153uvres dont l\u2019attribution \u00e0 Tatline a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9vis\u00e9e d\u00e8s le milieu des ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt (cat. N. 30, p. 86). Quant au relief de l\u2019ancienne collection Costaki (aujourd\u2019hui \u00e0 la galerie Tretyakov de Moscou), il serait indispensable de faire savoir clairement que cette pi\u00e8ce \u2013 probablement de Tatline \u2013 est incompl\u00e8te (sinon pire), donc mutil\u00e9e. (Et d\u2019ailleurs, pourquoi a-t-on invers\u00e9 le sens de son accrochage&nbsp;? Voil\u00e0 une question d\u2019importance pour d\u2019autres \u0153uvres de la m\u00eame \u00e9cole \u2013 celles de Malewicz, par exemple \u2013 \u00e0 laquelle je vais revenir bient\u00f4t).<\/p>\n<p>La r\u00e9flexion culturelle, et donc forc\u00e9ment id\u00e9ologique (nous sommes ici dans l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation), n\u2019est compl\u00e9t\u00e9e par aucune \u00e9tude formelle, analytique, aucun examen dans le domaine de l\u2019origine stylistique des formes et de leur situation historique et artistique.<br \/>\n Pour dire clairement, aucune v\u00e9ritable investigation philologique \u2013 des formes &#8212; n\u2019a trouv\u00e9 place parmi les nombreux commentaires de reliefs de Tatline qui figurent dans le catalogue. On aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 certainement bien inspir\u00e9 de reprendre en 2012 le filon analytique initi\u00e9 par l\u2019\u00e9tude d\u2019Edward Fry (1983) au lieu de se contenter de gargarismes th\u00e9oriques, si pris\u00e9s aujourd\u2019hui. Mais pour percer cet \u00e9cran de fum\u00e9e, il faudrait bien conna\u00eetre le vocabulaire pictural du cubisme et celui du futurisme, sources que Tatline reconnaissait parfaitement. Discourant sur l\u2019aspect \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re de notre existence et donc sur celui de la m\u00e9moire, il dit que dans dix-mille ans, le nom de Goethe ne sera probablement connu que de quelques \u00ab&nbsp;arch\u00e9ologues&nbsp;\u00bb, rarissimes sp\u00e9cialistes des \u00ab&nbsp;\u00e9poques anciennes&nbsp;\u00bb. Je dirais que l\u2019\u0153uvre de Tatline, l\u2019\u0153uvre v\u00e9ritable, dont les reliefs ne sont que le corps lumineux de l\u2019iceberg artistique qui a marqu\u00e9 l\u2019av\u00e8nement de l\u2019art moderne, a connu ce sort imm\u00e9diatement apr\u00e8s la r\u00e9alisation de ces derniers (1914-1916\/1917).
